Ian Machado Garry is aiming for a top-five welterweight bout, calling out the undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov after his victory at UFC 303. Garry believes he can be the first to defeat Rakhmonov, setting the stage for a high-stakes clash between two undefeated fighters.
Ian Machado Garry is riding high after his latest win at UFC 303, where he outclassed Michael "Venom" Page by unanimous decision in Las Vegas. This victory elevated Garry's pristine Octagon record to 8-0 and moved him one step closer to a potential title shot. Now, Garry has his sights set on an even bigger challenge.
In the UFC 303 post-fight press conference, Garry made it clear he's ready for a top-five opponent, specifically targeting the undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov. "There's some big names, there's some cool matchups. There's Shavkat, 18-0, undefeated. I'd love to get my hands on him," Garry stated. "I want to be the first guy to take his 0, and I know I can do it."
Garry and Rakhmonov have some history, having trained together at Kill Cliff FC in Florida a few years ago. This background adds an intriguing layer to the potential matchup. Rakhmonov responded to Garry's challenge via X, saying, "Looks like Ian forgot what happened during those training sessions. I don't mind reminding him in the future."
While Garry is keen on a showdown with Rakhmonov, the Kazakh fighter has his eyes on a title shot. Rakhmonov has expressed interest in facing the winner of the upcoming UFC 304 title bout between champion Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad. With a 100% finish rate and a 6-0 record in the UFC, Rakhmonov is arguably next in line for a title shot once Muhammad gets his chance.
Despite Rakhmonov's ambitions, Garry remains undeterred. "I've just beaten the fastest guy in the division other than me," Garry said of his victory over Page. "When it comes to striking and skills, I can do it. When it comes to grappling, we've seen the growth that I have. I'm excited to go out there and prove it against someone like (Rakhmonov)."
